Recently renovated two storey stone built house, 3 bedrooms, sleeps 6-8. The cottage is an old stone built house with two floors. It has recently been renovated and care has been taken to retain original features wherever possible. Downstairs consists of a comfortable living area, a dining area, a well equipped kitchen area and the bathroom. All the walls are stone and there’s a wood burning stove should it prove necessary. This area is wonderfully cool in summer and warm in winter! Upstairs, you’ll find the 3 bedrooms, all with pine floors and sloping pine timbered ceilings.

Drota beach, a mix of pebbles and coarse sand, is a 5 min drive away, though it’s also a very pleasant walk. It’s wonderfully quiet. There’s a little old cafe where you can get something to drink. The mountain village of Akrasi is 5 kms away up an unmade road (you’ll need to enjoy off-road driving!!). Here you will find traditional Greek coffee houses with some basic food. The nearest real centre with banks, supermarkets, restaurants etc. is at Plomari, a beautiful 40 minute drive from the cottage. Vatera, a long sandy beach with tavernas and night life, is about a 30 minute drive, partly on unmade roads. Natural history fans should pay a visit to the museum of Vrissa not far from Vatera. The capital of Lesvos, Mytilene, is about an hour’s drive from Drota. Lesvos has numerous natural hot springs, the waters of which are deemed to cure virtually every ailment you can imagine! Details on request. The island is also home to a well preserved fossilized forest – the only one in Europe.
The cottage is self catering but a Welcome Pack of breakfast things will be provided. Also, please feel free to help yourself to our stock of wine! Mains electricity. No land line. Signal for mobiles is poor in the village itself but cardphone and good signal down at the beach. Kitchen has a 3-ring gas burner as well as a small oven with 3 electric hot plates on top.
There are no roads into this remote village! You park under the shady plane tree and then walk! Our cottage is about 75 yards in. Although we have no garden per se you can sit directly outside the house as the path widens here creating a lovely area to sit and relax. In the summer, the few permanent inhabitants move down to live by the sea so you may well have the place to yourselves! Other people in the village will be those who, like us, fell in love with the place, bought a house there and did it up so there’s a wonderful sense of community spirit as everyone’s looking for the same thing- peace and quiet in a beautiful setting. The village has two churches (one is tiny!) and all the houses are old so it has retained its original character. In winter months, a brook runs under the little wooden bridge as it makes its way down the valley to the sea. Why not take a look for yourself on Google Earth?
If you look on Google Earth, Drota appears clearly midway between Plomari and Vrissa and is marked as Drota, Akrasi, Lesvos view. Our house is in the small hamlet due north of the beach by a big bend in the road, well before the hairpin bends. There are charter flights direct to Lesvos from London and Manchester (on Thursdays and Saturdays). Alternatively, you can fly into Athens and take a ferry (most of which travel overnight so you arrive the next morning) or hop on another flight from Athens to Lesvos (lots of them).
Other Activities: Painting (easel provided on request)
