Molivos is a delightful town in the north east of the island, dominated by its ancient hilltop castle and with phenomenal sea views. The winding cobbled streets reveal the tranquillity of traditional Greek life, majestic town houses, painted in reds and greens, alongside an array of stylish tavernas, bars and shops. There are a range of mini-markets nearby as well as a good baker and butcher. Nightlife is unsophisticated and mainly centres on the lively harbour front with its many tavernas and bars, some with live music, as well as the occasional nightclub.(Fewer bars, shops etc open in low season) There is an open-air cinema in peak season, with films in English. Minutes away from the house, the small town beach is pebbly, with sand out to sea, but the swimming is great, water sports, sun beds etc are available and there is a lovely open air pool adjacent. Nearby is the pretty village of Petra which has an excellent sandy beach and Eftalou, famous for its popular thermal baths..
The Island and further notes about the house.: Lesbos is Greece’s third largest island with dramatic mountain scenery and a landscape of olive groves and pine forests with the occasional monastery. It is a great place for walking, bird watching, relaxing on the beach and enjoying some of the best food in Greece. There are several thermal baths on the island including one at Eftalou just outside Molivos. The capital Mytilene is an interesting city to explore with museums and art galleries and a beautiful cathedral. The east of the island is characterised by lunar landscape and the fascinating petrified forest while Eressos, Sigri and Plomari are charming towns with pleasant beaches. Please note: We will leave kitchen basics for our guests to use. We would appreciate it if anything which is used up is replaced. There is also a video recorder in the study/baby room with a selection of videos (mainly for children) which you are welcome to use. Please leave everything in the house for others to enjoy!
Transport.: There is a reasonably good bus service across the island, especially between Molivos and Mytilini and May to September there is a regular bus service along the coast from Molivos to Petra and Anaxos. There is a taxi rank just outside the town and fares are cheap. A car is really not necessary but unless you wish to explore the island. There is a large port in Mytilini with daily sailings to Athens (about 9 hours) and Chios and less frequent sailings to Limnos and Rhodes. Domestic flights to Athens take about 45 minutes (Aegean and Olympic Airways). Direct charter flights from the UK (Gatwick and Manchester) are from May to Mid October on Thursdays (currently First Choice and Thomson). Otherwise you have to fly via Athens (Easyjet, Olympic and British Airways plus Aegean from Stansted. Aegean and Easyjet are cheaper than getting direct flight this year, In season the changeover day for rentals is Thursday. There are also direct flights from Holland, Norway and Germany.
Trips.: There is a very good book on walks in the area (in the house) which are particularly enjoyable in the early and late season. Bird watching is superb in spring and autumn and Molivos is about half an hour from the gulf of Kalloni where many interesting birds can be spotted (120 seen by guests!). Mountain bikes can be hired locally and for the less energetic donkey treks (often quite hilarious) can be arranged with local travel agents- usually into the nearby hills and ending up at a taverna. The swimming is good everywhere and you can snorkel around the rocks off Molivos. Serious beach bums might prefer to idle the day away at the nearby larger sandy beaches of Petra and Anaxos. Boat trips along the coast with swimming and barbeque are wonderfully relaxing.
Other Activities: Donkey trekking, Bird watching
